History of Manorhamilton
Nestling at the centre of the North Leitirm Glens sits Manorhamilton, a town rich in history and heritage and surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of lovely Leitrim. On an elevated site overlooking the town stands the ruins of Hamilton's Castle. This is now the only visible reminder of Sir Frederick Hamilton, from Paisley in Scotland, who in March 1622, was granted 6,500 acres of Leitrim land in this area and stamped his name on our town. The castle itself, modeled on Rathfarnham Castle, was completed in 1636. It measured 105 ft. in length, 90 ft. in width and stood 50ft. high. It was surrounded by a brawn wall 12-14 ft. high and was one of the best fortified houses of its time. During the 1641 Rising the castle was besieged on three occasions and when the town of Manorhamilton was burned to the ground in January 1642, the towns people and soldiers were afforded protection within its brawn walls. The lifetime of the castle was short and in May 1652 it was burned by the forces of the Viceroy,Clanrickard. Yet, after almost 380 years, under present owners,Tony & Maura Daly, it is a must-see tourist attraction.
